Science and Society - a Dialogue
Research and Public are often far apart. Modern biology has been shaped by molecular methods, while the public sees anything linked to genes rather sceptically. No surprise: what is not understood, rises mistrust. Therefore, the Botanical Institute wants to use the Botanical Garden as platform to explain to the public, what we do in our research. Our concept for the public comprises the following elements:
1. Through the Association Friends of the Botanical Garden at the KIT we offer at least once a month public events. Variety of topics is extensive, ranging from the smart tricks of plants, expeditions to, where the pepper grows, to cultural events as the Orchestra of Change or the format Lyrics and Botany and societal issues such as genome editing, globalisation or climate change.
2. On request, we also offer excursions for school classes or groups. Contact.
3. The garden is not only opened during the week, but also on Sunday. Entrance is free, and we have prepared Topical Paths with numerous stations, where you can get into different topics by your own, supported by information resources in site and in the web.
Events with the Association of FriendsIn cooperation with the Verein der Freunde und Förderer des Botanischen Gartens am KIT we offer around once a month events for the general public. In excursions, seminars, but also diverse cultural formats we demonstrate the manifold relations between plants and humsn, but also addresse societal debates on topics as food, climate change, gene technology or genome editing. The events are often well visited, therefore, it is wise to book in advance.

Poetry and BotanyIn cooperation with the Pedagogic University (German and English Seminar) we offer every June the popular format Poetry and Botany in frame of the Week of the Botanic Gardens. Here, the students present poetry of known authors, but also self-written texts and poems that deal with plants and we add the botanical context. This in the romantic atmosphere of a summer evening, mostly between the green houses - this format has already achieved cult status. |

School ClassesThe garden is used by many school classes and even kindergarden groups as extrascholar learning space. In our format Green School Teacher students develop appropriate didactic offers and explore them under real-world conditions. In cooperation with the Association of Friends, we are by this able to offer to schools a great variety of offers. |

Topical PathsThe garden is open during the week and freely accessible, even on Sundays. Who wants to know more about the exciting life of plants, can move along topical paths, supported by our internet pages, to explore different facets of the topic. So far, we have developed two of these topical paths: Floral Sex - on the secret sexuality of plants, Karlsruhe as cradle of genetics and the sophisticated tricks, by which plants manipulate other life forms to help them in their propagation. The Garden as Noah's Arc - on new approaches for conservation of biodiversity from ex-situ cultures till a gene bank for wild plants. Learn, why species conservation is not only important for the plants themselves, but also for us, humans. |
